Do Not Keep Your Job Search Between You and Your Laptop!

Way too often job seekers keep their search secret and private. This can be due to the perceived stigma of being unemployed. Or because they want to avoid their current employer to be informed of their will to seek for a better opportunity. Whatever the reason, getting a job is a game better played as a team. Knowledgeable job seekers surround themselves with people to help them succeed through support and advice. Here are a 3 suggestions for encouraging your friends and family members to help you get that next job.

  •  Ask them to check all aspects of the application you present to potential employers - from your CV and cover letter, to the outfits you wear to interviews. Even the most self-aware among us need the broader perspective that comes with honest feedback.

  • Involve them in your work plan. Job search can be daunting and sap the motivation of the hardiest candidate. Entourage can help to provide structure to your search, keeping you on track. Have your friends help you build a daily schedule that includes research, networking, application and follow-up calls, and make sure you meet your targets.

  • Some job seekers can be so focused on their job search, they forget there is a life beside the quest. Locking yourself into isolation will only leave you unhappy and unproductive. Ask your friends to help keeping your social life active.
